LICHTER. AN ELECTROACOUSTIC PROJECT BY MOUSE ON MARS

by Francesco Lucifora

ON THE OCCASION OF THE MOM LIVE SET LICHTER SCHEDULED FOR MAY 13TH IN THE MODICA ART SYSTEM PROJECT, WE PROPOSE A FOCUS ABOUT MOUSE ON MARS AND THEIR LATEST ALBUM THROUGH ELECTRONIC AND SOUND RESEARCH.

Lichter

Justin Vernon, Aaron & Brice Dessner and Rully Shabara.

In 1994 when the Mouse On Mars entered on the independent music scene with the ep Frosch, labelled Too Pure, and Vulvaland album, it was already evident a few details that would have distinguished them sharply in the electronic sphere.
Andi Toma and Jan St.Werner are the architects of the renovation that has affected the German electronic music, brought to the forefront by pioneers such as Faust, Krafwerk, Neu and the influence of Tangerine Dream, the Krautrock and the Berlin School in general.
The Mouse On Mars have pushed hard their experimental trend, shaping the sound as a matter of synthesis between different genres, acoustic environments and the possibility of overrunning.

Lichter

The sequence of their albums and ep can be viewed as exclusive sets in which the sound is the result of a constant and tireless creative research.
In September 2015 the vinyl Lichter, produced by Thomas Knoefel and Infinite Greyscale, has made its appearance, the first part of a new electroacoustic composing project in limited edition; a 10-inch pink disc with the MOM music on one side, and abstractions screen printing Ulrich Schmidt-Novak on the other, while the cover of the project was implemented by Paul McDevitt and Cornelius Quabeck with a Risograph printer.
Lichter is a long track lasting 13 minutes with percussive opening, resembling an epic march, developed in up-time as a moving mechanism that gives back the feeling of an unstoppable object.

Lichter

Lichter è un disco single side inciso su vinile rosa neon con lato b spruzzato a mano. 33 giri – 10 pollici – 13’. Edizione limitata di 300 pz. Prodotto da Thomas Knoefel. Disegno a mano su vinile di Paul McDevitt and Cornelius Quabeck. Stampa di Ulrich Schmidt-Novak. Include inserto numerato, fotografia e codice download. Mastered di Cem Oral at Jammin Masters, cut at D&M, Berlin.

In line with most of Mouse On Mars insights, Lichter goes through a soundscape with elements of dub, psychedelia and krautrock, incorporating sounds robots built by Sonic Ronots' Morittz Simon Geist and the percussion’s intervention by Dodo Nkishi. A work that causes dizziness, stumbling from channel to channel, with unexpected, instrumental slowdown, prelude to fast restarts made possible by stratifications obtained with smrph, a feedback software.
Recently presented at Sprüth Magers Gallery in Berlin and on SWR television channel, Licther, performed live, works on a system based on the layers of the audio recording and connected to a network of luminous bodies, sensitive to data transmission and inputs.

The final minutes of this sound work reserve acoustic emotions of admirable workmanship, solving the breakbeat sound with muffled steps, and use of non-conventional stereo effects. The video that supports the new work of Mouse On Mars was made by Paul McDevitt and Jamie Lemoine.
