Arte e Critica, n. 86/87,autunno – inverno 2016/2017, pp. 70-71.

BURRI V/S RAUSCHENBERG… AND KOUNELLIS. A TESTIMONY

At the time of the collaboration with Giorgio Cortenova at Palazzo Forti, between the second half of the eighties and the early nineties, we realized a series of exhibition events on the theme of historical continuity between figures, groups, tendencies. An idea that had perfectly suited the work that characterized the activity of the Galleria Civica in Verona since its opening. Specifically, I proposed a project to be dedicated to Burri and Kounellis, which seemed to me an occasion to start reflecting again on what had happened in art from the fifties onwards.
To my eye the two artists had in common, in addition to their standing out on the international scene, their being included in the continuity of what even then could be defined the avant-garde tradition. How could one not see a continuity between the resewn jute sacks and the fabric roses attached with press-studs, between the plastics, and even more between the burnt wood and a certain use of fire and coal? And then not only the materials used, the sacks, woods, irons, but also a certain physical performativity. Also in this sense, one could in fact recognize a continuity between Burri shooting a beer can, then defining it as sculpture (photographs published in ’59), or burning plastic with a lighted blowtorch (who does not remember the photographs by Amendola) and Kounellis who lets himself be photographed with a support in his mouth with a lighted candle or a lighted blowtorch on it. All facts that are governed by the immanent logic of action that is transformed into artistic event, but united, and this is the point, by an archaic memory.
I met Kounellis and I mentioned the exhibition to him and the ideas I had: he listened to me without comment – Jannis can be very enigmatic – but I felt that behind his silence there was an assent. He didn’t want to expose himself, he was right, but that hypothesis intrigued him. In conclusion, I realized that I had to proceed. Therefore, at the beginning of summer ’92, I went to visit Burri at his house-studio in Beaulieu, on the French Riviera. He welcomed me with warm hospitality and after the usual courtesies we arrived at the aim of my visit. I told him the reasons that prompted me to conceive that exhibition. He listened to me with great attention, but his only answer was to start to speak heatedly about how he would have willingly participated in an exhibition that would have compared him with Rauschenberg and about how he would have done his best in order to prove his superiority. The rivalry with the young American was known, it was said that the American Artist had arrived in Rome in the early fifties, that he had met Burri and had appreciated his works.
Personally, I didn’t follow his suggestion because my project had a completely different intent, I was more interested in thinking in terms of continuity rather than in terms of comparison. The exhibition I had in mind was driven by a historical reason, it aimed to search for the points of convergence rather than the divergences between the two experiences that, stretched to the limit could be considered as artistic and behavioural paradigms of two subsequent generations located at the end of the Modern Movement. And then, at that time, I was not even so sure of the result of a comparison Rauschenberg / Burri. In the early nineties, the world was totally changing: just when the overtaking of the modern was decreed, the end of grand narratives (Lyotard), that in art can be the same to say the end of the avant-garde, with all its intensions to found an aesthetic society (Menna), the maximum diffusion of the languages that characterized it (objectual, material, of Arte Povera, etc.) was registered. While painting, with its heavy burden of tradition, of aesthetic values and so on, was definitively overwhelmed by anti-form. In the not so short visit that I made to him, Burri had asked about the artists of my generation, which was artistically born between the late seventies and the beginning of the subsequent decade. Artists with whom I had experienced what was then still called “critical militancy”. Among everybody, he focused his attention particularly on Bruno Ceccobelli, and the reasons for this emerged during the conversation: he was intrigued by their being from the same region, they both came from Umbria.
This intrigued me, because if on the one hand Burri looked for comparison, international competition, on the other hand he proved to be attached to his native land, but not so much as to reaffirm a genius loci, a possible matrix, but rather for a more immediate sentimentalism. I realized, however, that Burri was anything but interested in historical continuity, in the sense of tradition, albeit the tradition that Adorno had indicated as remaining alive in the transmission from one hand to the other, from one generation to another. How many times had Burri repeated, intent on affirming the absolute values of art, that he had nothing to add about what he continued to call painting, although the works were often accumulations of materials: molds, tars, plastics, etc.? “Words cannot help me – he said – when I try to speak about my painting. This is an irreducible presence that refuses to be translated into any other form of expression.”
He was interested in neither the historical context nor the social conditions in which his work was carried out. He was not even interested in any phenomenology, his work was simply the result of his exceptional talent, still natural, which naturally conversed with the universal, it was simply the natural condition of a spirit that, timeless, turned towards the classical dimension. What I proposed could seem to him a tactical move, an assist that he didn’t want to receive: the absolute value badly fits relativity, any form of closeness. Yet, it is precisely in the relationship with others, as the exhibition that closes the celebration of the centenary of his birth has abundantly proved, that Burri showed his greatness as a precursor of sensitivity but above all as builder of values. Today, after more than twenty years, I think that the comparison that one should make (I wonder if it will ever be possible) is among Burri, Rauschenberg and Kounellis. Born within about ten years of each other, they represent an ideal handover to explain the second half of the last decade, entirely stretched between form and anti-form. And I imagine Kounellis providing an assist for Burri, to reconfirm the vitality of form.

Arte e Critica, no. 86/87, Autumn – Winter 2016/2017, 70-71.
