Arte e Critica, n. 82, estate 2015, pp. 78-81.

LARA FAVARETTO. BY LAND AND BY SEA. MOMENTARY MONUMENT

A momentary monument. An oxymoronic polarity that seems to mark the extremes of a century, the twentieth, and to synthesize magisterially a parable, from monument to momentary.
Proposing once again the idea of the monument is undoubtedly interesting and probably necessary. But the formula that allows the reintroduction into our lexicon, and therefore into our imaginary, of such a distant word/concept is the coming closer to that momentariness, the temporal opposite of what the idea of monument carries with it over the centuries in western tradition.
Being no longer able to think of the duration, fleeing from any projection of limitlessness, and even from any “long-term” hypothesis, we feel protected within that sense of irreverence and liberty that we can also perhaps call precariousness. It’s a pity that this flattering conquest, so tied to the illusion of self-determination, so close to the dream of freedom from any institutional convention in the management of time and space, and therefore of life, was then carried out by the pervasive dominant system that transformed it into a horrifying instrument of blackmail towards contemporary man, precarious for the world even in minimal rights, constrained within the golden cage of a landscape controlled by the early and built-in obsolescence of all its components.
But probably it is not of this that Lara Favaretto intends to speak in her imposing project dedicated to some noteworthy characters who have disappeared into anonymity without leaving any trace: Jean-Albert Dadas, Percy Fawcett, Amelia Mary Earhart, Arthur Cravan, Robert James “Bobby” Fischer, Donald Crowhurst, Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Nikola Tesla, Thomas P. “Boston” Corbett, Ettore Majorana, Leslie Conway “Lester” Bangs, Jerome David Salinger, Bruno Manser, Everett Ruess, Bas Jan Ader, László Tóth, Thomas Ruggles Pynchon. A project that began in 2009 with the artificial swamp, Momentary Monument (The Swamp) created for the 53rd Venice Biennial, passed through the publication in 2010 of the book Momentary Monument I (Archive Books) and culminating at the moment at MAXXI with Good Luck, the arrangement of 18 of the 20 cenotaphs on which the artist has worked in recent years.
The sensation is that these figures to be remembered, or in any case to pay homage to, to respect for the great dignity in their disappearance, have struck the artists above all for the particular nature and perhaps also the irregularity of their existences, for the inventive dimension that has distinguished them and that led them to lead sui generis lives and consequently to choose, who knows whether truly voluntarily, sui generis modes of exiting those very lives.

<img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-4727" title="Lara Favaretto, Good luck, installation view, MAXXI, Rome, 2015. This is the terrain shared by those to whom the cenotaphs are dedicated. And it seems almost as though these personages represent a sort of personal, ideal constellation, a bit like small study rooms of the 1400s where the cycle of illustrious men welcomed the projections of identity of the commissioning clients.
Otherwise, why preserve and archive for years objects, memories, thoughts that belonged to or that recall these men and these women? Indeed, we have to remember that each cenotaph preserves within itself, surrounded by the soil, a sealed box containing a small memorial legacy.
Why dedicate so much time the planning of their cenotaphs/portraits?
Why tie one’s own daily life in the studio (be it a physical or mental space) to their invisible presences, with which images, details, small or large mysteries, are shared?
There is a liquid element common to many of their “departures”. Many disappeared while at or above the sea. Water, the sea. To leave this life returning in some way to one’s own origin, liquid, in a circularity that seems to be seamless, subtracting the ordinary cadences of time, its tyranny over life, to attribute to it new and unexplored possibilities of being thought and lived.
There come to mind the great brushes of the carwash of Simple men, which with spinning energy, both mechanical and chromatic, consume themselves in the vital and strenuous act of subtracting themselves from the built-in destiny of their function, and while they consume themselves, they write, or rather they leave a trace of their existence scratching they sheet of metal against which they turn, depositing pigments there as well. An interesting response to the problem of consumption, and more in general to that of entropy, as posed by De Dominicis.
But this work presented at the MAXXI does not speak of death, it speaks of disappearance, it commemorates not the dead, but the disappeared. The temporality changes. These personages are not read according to natural parameters, those of the cycle of life, but within a sort of literary and mysterious dimension that subtracts them from the time of physical finiteness to entrust them to another type of time, more impalpable, more indeterminate, in the end freer.
This is the exorcising of something intolerable, that in reality is so present, so solemn. For example in those geometrical heaps of soil.
And yet in Momentary Monument the soil assumes another value, it is there as one of the three elements, together with wood and brass, with which the portraits of the disappeared are composed. In each of the cenotaphs the earth, like a warm moment in existence, generator of life, is put into precarious equilibrium with the compact solidity of the wood and the mirroring elasticity of the brass.
The project exudes a powerful symbolic dimension and it condenses above all in these three materials that have been chosen to “portray” the protagonists, the disappeared.
In my opinion Favaretto has conceived a work that seems to be a hinge between two epochs. The materials are among those that the second half of the 1900s favoured because of the specific nature of their physicality, eschewing any possible postponement; the second half of the 1900s concentrated, bent perhaps is the more precise term, on the values of the present.
The artist uses the same language and the same materials of the second half of the 1900s, even the same images. Behind each of these sculptures/monuments we can almost recognize a well-known artist, so strong and precise is the reference. But having superimposed the two levels, the physical one, of the here and now, the astanza as Brandi would have put it, and the symbolic level – the monument, the cenotaph, the restitutional power of the materials – creates at this point a short circuit that must be recognized.
This project, as with its title, Momentary Monument, in the bipolarity that gives it its structure, reads the past but marks the present, posing those radical questions to which the previous century had provided answers that today are no longer sufficient.
The overbearing “realism” that has marked a lot of poetics of the last five or six decades makes the pace and yearns to reach a vaster dimension, ungraspable because of its vastness, its depth, a meeting up that restores to man the instruments for rethinking freedom. The route is no longer the one that the 1900s thought had been conquered. Along that route a powerful and devious opponent has established itself, a sordid satisfier of that “bundle of desires” that man has become.
The question is to be taken up from far away, moving up through time.
I believe that the pace the preparation of the 18 cenotaphs imposes on space and on time is the most precise and explicit indication that can reach us.

Arte e Critica, no. 82, Summer 2015, pp. 78-81.

Un monumento momentaneo.
